Metro in Amsterdam

The city of Amsterdam only has 4 metrolines. The metro and light rail lines do not only provide a fast link between suburban, industrial and business areas, but also give direct access to the regional and national railroad network. This way, a large area can be reached quite easily and quickly using public transportation.

The metro lines all depart from Central Station to their final destinations which are Westwijk, Gein, Gaasperplas and Isolatorweg in the north of Amsterdam.

Currently they are building a new metro line which will be finished in 2011. This new line will increase the accessibility of the city centre by a fast connection between Amsterdam-North, the city centre and Amsterdam-South.

One important note is that you cannot buy a ticket in the metro as you can in the bus. The same tickets are valid though.

For more information about the metro in Amsterdam and other forms of public transport you should visit the GVB website.
