Ameland
Ameland has four quiet villages, however in summer it is full fo tourists looking for a relaxed holiday. Ballum with almost 350 inhabitants is the smallest village on the island. Many old houses with wall anchors dating from the 18th century still remained in this protected village. Buren offers modern facilities including a supermarket, pubs, shops and friendly restaurants. The real-life history book of Ameland is the village of Hollum. It is also a protected village with his 58 metre high eye-catching lighthouse on the beach. The construction is visible from all spots of the island. The fourth village is Nes. Here all fine aspects of Ameland from past and present meet. You will find a modern shopping and entertainment centre but also many commanders' houses. Ameland is a car-free island! So renting a bike is highly recommended if you want a taste of the island-atmosphere.
