Things to do for kids

In the Netherlands many things are specially established or organized for kids. In Amsterdam you will find cafés, cinemas, farms, restaurants, theatres, circuses and zoos which are dedicated to them. There are places where kids can build dams, generate their own electricity, play with windmills, paddle with boats on the canals, play in hundreds of playgrounds or cook their own food. Go for example to Madame Tussauds Museum, there they can take pictures together with a lot of their heroes from the cinema and other great personalities. You will find further information about this museum in the sightseeing/museum section.
Other enjoyable places to go are NEMO (a scientific centre) Artis the zoo, TunFun, an underground play area or just feed the pigeons at the Dam Square. For a real theme park, you can go to "Walibi World " , not far away from Amsterdam. Kids will enjoy all its different water- and thrill rides. The park is open between March and October. For further information check their website:

Also, kids like to ride a bike and fortunately Amsterdam gives many opportunities to go cycling with your child. Yet, watch out for tourists walking on cycle paths or local inhabitants who think they are the king of the road (i.e. cycle fast and crazy)

An advantage of Amsterdam (and the rest of the Netherlands) is that almost all people speak, besides Dutch, also English. Older children, who can speak English, can explore Amsterdam on their own without parents worrying too much about a language barrier.
