Vlieland

Vlieland is one of the five wadden islands which are important bird-breeding grounds and provide an escape for stressed southerners who want to touch roots with nature.

Vlieland has more of a family atmosphere because they have only 15 hotels, two campgrounds and a lot of appartments. Ferries, which take about 1,5 houres, from Den Helder, Harlingen, Holwerd and Lauwersoog connect the island to the mainland. The variety of flora and fauna on the island is due to the strong contrast of forest and dune areas. Vlieland's diverse birdlife attracts tourists and locals as well. There are several organised excursions by the Foresty Commision. Also the island celebrates a lot of events during summer season.

Oost-Vlieland is the only mayor town of this island. Before Terschelling but after Texel, Vielland is the second island in the chain if you are counting from west to east. The island is also called Sahara of the north, because 20 km of beautiful quiet sandy beach - a large part of the island - in the western part consists mainly of sand.
