Schiermonnikoog

Schiermonnikoog is the nothernmost wadden island of the Netherlands. About 1.000 people live on the 18 km long and 3 km wide island. But more than 300.000 guests visit the island with its car free zone every year. There are more than 6.000 beds in the hotels, pensions, appartments, campings and a youth hostels. Schiermonnikoog also has beautiful flora and fauna like the other wadden islands. Famous and extraordinary is the beach of this island because it is Europe's widest and largest one. Schiermonnikoog comes from  "schier" which means grey and "oog" which means island. Because the monks wore grey cowls the island was called: island of grey monks = Schiermonnikoog!
